Students will compare and contrast Luzon, Philippines, and Normandy, France in order to visualize and understand the challenges each battle location presented. Students will use Mr. Branon’s interview to understand the complexity of jungle terrain faced by American soldiers and how they had to employ new strategies to accomplish missions.

Students will listen as the Miller Brothers discuss how they and other Vietnam soldiers did not receive a hero’s welcome when they returned to the States. They will analyze primary sources from the area to better understand the climate of the time period that resulted in the hostile treatment of Vietnam veterans.

Vietnam veteran Tom McKinney states that the unpopular views of the Vietnam War weighed on the minds of soldiers, both while fighting and once they returned. Protests occurred in all states in the form of gatherings, editorials, speeches, and popular music.

Students will be introduced to war photographer Dickey Chapelle by analyzing her photography, answering the corresponding questions, and finishing up with a writing assignment focused on perspectives to assess understanding.

Vietnam-era veteran Martin Marne flew missions over Germany during the Cold War. At the time, the country was divided into East and West Germany, with the Berlin Wall dividing Berlin.

Although they were not allowed to serve in the same unit, all five Miller brothers served in Vietnam. All fought and all returned home. At some point in American military history, brothers were allowed to serve together in the same units or on ships. The death of the Sullivan Brothers in 1942 altered this allowance.
